Most Comfortable Open Toe Pumps
It’s not that women are naive, but when it comes to shoes, we want to believe in miracles.
When shoe companies brag that they’ve uncovered the secret of making high heels that are both cute and comfortable, of course you and I want this to be the beginning of a revolution in towering, fabulous footwear. High-end shoemaker Taryn Rose recently started advertising “comfortably sexy” shoes, and Kenneth Cole store windows are boasting “The most comfortable shoes you’ll ever look good in … guaranteed.”
Ellen Warren from the Chicago Tribune bought a pair of shoes from each to put the claims to the test. To make it interesting, she added a pair of fairly equally high heels from Cole Haan, which has been touting its comfortable Nike Air technology for nearly a decade. And, on a whim, she stopped by Naturalizer, the shoe store long associated with comfortable but frumpy footwear. She found a pump there that was stylish enough, with a heel high enough, to be part of the test.
Then she enlisted a trio of shoe-loving co-workers to help her decide if the footwear lived up to the hype. Each of them took a daylong (or nightlong) spin in each pair. No cheating! Four women, four pairs of shoes, some serious pain… and surprising results.
NATURALIZER – Open Toe Dress Sandal
The hype: “Beautiful fit and are comfortable enough to wear throughout the day.”
Comfort: Stood up to some real action. The best.
Bottom line: Yes! Recession friendly and foot friendly. An ideal combo. Best buy by far.
COLE HAAN – Laney Dress Pump
The hype: “Nike Air technology. … A cushion against the real world.”
Comfort: A close second place.
Bottom line: They’re eye¬catching, versatile and lived up to their comfort claim.
NOT WORTH IT
TARYN ROSE – Fierce Dress Pump
The hype: “Style that’s comfortably sexy day and night.”
Comfort: Third place out of four
Bottom line: At this price – six times what our winning pair cost – these should have been as comfortable as fuzzy bunny slippers. The best you can say is they weren’t the worst.
OUCH! NO MORE!
KENNETH COLE – Ingrahm Dress Pump
The hype: “Groundbreaking … 4 years in the making … will change your relationship with your feet, step by step.”
Comfort: Last place
Bottom line: High style but low comfort for most of our testers.
